JPMonje.net undergone a migration from the old hosting server to the new one. My blog was offline for 19 hours+ to be approximate yesterday as soon as I ordered a new hosting package from my hosting provider. They are quick in setting up my new account. BTW, I’m still with Philhosting! Yeah, you read it right.
3 GB of web-space and an un-metered bandwidth. With that much web-space, I’m planning to set-up my photo gallery instead of hosting my photos on Google’s free Picasa Web Album. Anyway, I’m nearing my 1GB limit so its time to have that much capacity. Wee!

I posted about my problems (1)(2) on my webhost before and I mean what I said in those posts. However, I’ve given them a chance and I’ve stayed with them unto this day. The only problem was their support. It will took them more than a day for your support ticket to be answered. And I hate waiting for answers. Hehe. I guess that is what you get if you don’t pay for support. In fact, submitting a ticket to them is absolutely free compared to other hosting accounts abroad where you are required to pay dollars for support. So, that settles it.

So my blog is on a new server which my webhost claims has a “Zero Downtime Architecture“. Let see then.

Woot! I just discovered that my blog JPMonje.net breached the “zero” pagerank barrier and up to pagerank number 1 once again. What I’ve been doing for the past months to revive my blog are paying off. It is great for any blog to achieve an increasing pagerank because you can rank higher in google search for a particular keyword. However, by the recent failure on my part to take care of my blog, my pagerank went to zero. I missed my pagerank 2 on my old blog before : (. I guess the incoming links are picking up right now. I have to tweak my .htaccess (which my host doesn’t allow me to because it was hidden) to redirect those that link to my previous blog to my new address. I don’t know if the settings for domain redirect on the cPanel is the same as tweaking my .htacces file for the redirect. That way, all those blogs that link to my previous blog will be redirected to the new address. My blog will benefit from it and additional links to my blog will be added. As of this posting, I’m still in the process of migrating my blog to a new server to avoid downtimes.

My pagerank below:

My blog is up again after a three day downtime as a result of a server slowdown my blog is hosted into. It happened on the weekend and any of my complaints regarding the problem were answered Monday. My site was accessible according to them and I confirmed it afterward. However, they didn’t explicitly mention why my site went down. I’m pissed of with the way they handle customer inquires and complaints. Despite that, I planned to move my account to their new server since the old one my blog is hosted into is nearly obsolete as what they said on their website. I already had done a full backup of my blog and all the files uploaded therein. All I’m looking forward to is their immediate reply to my upgrade request. I hope that there will be at least 99.9 percent uptime on their new server. Their failure will result for my transfer to another web host.

For my readers, my apologies.

Update: I recieved a reply from one of my support tickets on why my blog went down last Friday.

I guess I reached 60% of what I’ve been aiming for the past month to fully resuscitate my blog after being idle for the past months. Everything were back to scratch and started as if I have opened a new blog. It feels like I’m back on the day when I first learned all about blogging. And then I realized I started to learn from it again. I know I had incurred a lot of mistakes maintaining my blog before but that does not hinder me to try again and pursue what I’ve started 2 years ago (2 years and a half maybe, I can’t remember.)

So far, I’ve been able to restore my writing abilities although it needs more practice and proofreading before I hit the publish button. I also read John Chow’s e-book about tips in blogging. I never intended to focus on monetizing my blog at the meantime. But you can see some Google Adsense on my blog just for the feel of it.

Here’s what’s going on currently on my blog:

My previous posts from my old blog are now appearing on Google based from different keywords.

Visits and pageviews on my blog are picking up traffic with search engines being the prominent traffic-sources.

Google sitemap reports are returning numerous errors on links from my previous blog which still in Google’s cache but minimal compared last month.

Subscribers are picking up but slowly. To encourage sign-ups I already put up a subscription box and rss feed links visible to the visitors. If you’re reading this you may already subscribe. Hehe

I read Yatot’s post about 10 SEO Tips for beginners. Yes, I treat myself as a newbie again. . But hey, I learned and from the past week one of my posts reached #1 on Google searches. My post about the album of Sabrina made it at least to the front page of Google searches with the keywords “Sabrina I Love Acoustic” and “Sabrina Intimate interpretations of your favorite hits“. By highlighting specific keywords (italicized or make it bold) you can actually reach the front page if you do it correctly. I also use a wordpress plugin “All In One SEO Pack” to further enhance my blog’s visibility on search engines. Consulting my stats through Google Analytics, the keywords aforementioned are now on the top resulting in hundreds of visits and counting.

I still have a lot to learn and I treat this as a reminder that PERSONAL blogs are meant to be taken care of by their OWNER.

I finally decided to close my old blog “Ako si Eagleman” and delete all ftp files in my cPanel and the blog on my blogger account. I imported all of my posts from blogger to wordpress and plan to fix all of them one by one. Importing from blogger to wordpress is easy. However, keep in mind that you must perform a backup of your blog in case something goes wrong with your wordpress blog after the import.

There are some minor bugs I encountered after the import.

A lot of unclosed tags on posts which was imported include image links and html formatting.

The anchor tag on author name who left comments in the imported posts removed.

I can still access my old blog under this domain even if I deleted all the files in my cPanel.

I had to perform a “spring clean” to the older posts so that unwanted categories will be removed, images and html formatting will be fixed. Optimize my blog again for search engines and consult my webmaster tools for broken links. It will took me some time but it’s all worth it when finished.

It was some sort of a bug when I first realized that my newly upgraded wordpress 2.7 (again) dashboard acted different from the previous experience i had last year. I can’t drag any widget in my dashboard. The drop down menus won’t work and the tool buttons on creating a post went missing. Putting pictures into my post went problematic.

I took me days before I decided to re-install the whole thing , deleting wordpress files and uploading them again. I decided to download a fresh copy of wordpress 2.7 files. I had this hunch that something went wrong when I upgraded my wordpress files before when my ever-reliable-hosting problem downgraded my wordpress version to 2.5. As soon as I accessed my file manager on my cPanel, I selected the files needed to be deleted. On the other tab on my firefox browser, I was starting to deactivate all my plugins when I started to delete the files. But it was too late. I can’t access wordpress anymore because I already deleted the files. Anyway I proceeded to the install process and thank God it went well. My dashboard functions as is and all the problems before, gone. It was a relief.

I’m deeply unsatisfied with the way my web hosting provider handles problems with their clients. I had encountered a handful of problems ranging from downtime to loss of data. A summary of the problems that I encountered after the jump.

December of last year I upgraded my wordpress version to the latest 2.7. Upgraded my plugins and fixed my newly installed Jello-Walla-Mello wordpress theme. Tweaking some CSS and fine tuning my blog for search engines and adsense. All went well until the upgrade of a new cPanel version. I was impressed by the new look of the new cPanel when I logged on to my account on new year’s eve. When I get back to Odiongan from the capital of Romblon, I noticed that I can’t access my blog, my cPanel and my wordpress admin page. After two days, I successfully accessed my wp-admin page and to my surprise my wordpress version was downgraded. I scanned my file manager to look for odd changes and saw that some files were missing and that the wordpress files’ version are dated back last May and June of 2008 instead of December 2008. It was like I performed a “System Restore” on my cPanel that all the changes I made on that day reverted back before I upgraded my wordpress. Even the theme Jello-Walla-Mello went missing from the themes folder. I had backups but It will took me time to do that and internet speed here is slow. I sent a support ticket and someone there replied to give them my accounts username and password. I recieved an update from them that they will attend to the situation and update me as soon as possible. Weeks later no reply. They even closed the ticket.

Now I performed all the uploads and upgrade of my wordpress once again.

Ahh….! There’s a logo contest made by Reyna Elena and the voting entries are due this 12 p.m. of this day/tomorrow until 12 noon (Manila Time). So I made one today so quickly because there is this Kuya who emailed me last night. He begged and almost kneel down just to vote for him. Wahehe. Peace world!

So to make it quick, below are my votes:

1.) Pinoy Ambisyoso

2.) Chuvaness/Malen

3.) Kotseng Kuba

4.) Chuvaness/Malen

5.) 100% Batangueno

As I’ve said awhile ago, the voting ends strike this 12 pm of this day/tomorrow at 12 noon. So if you you want to make a vote, go to Social Climbing Logo Contest by Reyna Elena and then read the mechanics there.

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers joining this online business card program called Entrecard. Most of the Pinoy Blogs I usually visit today contains what they call “Blog of the Day” or “Featured Blog” on their sidebar that features Entrecard blog avatars (pics) which links to that blog. These avatars are from blogs that where approved by the site owner to be shown/advertise for full 24 hours. This is indeed a nice way to get a substantial amount of traffic to your blog and at the same time provide or share traffic from your blog to others. However, I’m shying away from joining the hype of subscribing and putting Entrecard widgets on my blog before. Even if everyone else hopped on the bandwagon and enjoy the benefits of increased blog traffic. I dunno, I just don’t feel the urge to join that time. But then, it’s all about to change.

Christmas day, I decided to join Entrecard on the start of the year 2008. And so I did. At first it was quite confusing. Don’t know how to earn credits or even advertise at first until I stumble upon this Help section and read the details many times just to understand it carefully. Advert requests are piling up as well as the number of cards dropped on my site. It was fun seeing the stats rise from 0. I must drop my cards to those blogs listed on the Campaign menu to earn credits. It was that easy! I already seen the effects on my blog traffic stats 15 minutes after putting the widget on my blog. Cool!

If you’re a blogger and haven’t joined the Entrecard craze, why not visit their site, watch the video and sign-up. Already a member, dropped your card Now!

First and foremost, I want to congratulate the former Vice-president Mr. Al Gore and UN’s Intergovernmental Panel for winning the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 for their work against global warming. The award recognizes Al Gore and IPCC’s efforts to build up awareness about man-made changes to our climate. The information on global warming was disseminated around the world and that truly the earth was in planetary emergency and in need of our help.

Segregation of Household Wastes
Waste segregation is the process of separating trash from biodegradable ones, recyclable materials and trash that need to be dumped on a dump site. It is an eco-friendly practice to reduce garbage disposal and accumulation in landfills. Thus decreasing the negative impact these wastes produce to the environment. With this in effect, local governments need not to expand or allocate much larger landfills to accommodate the cities garbage disposal needs.

How to segregate trash? It is fairly an easy task to do and for those who need more information on how segregation works, one should inquire to their barangay or local government. Or you can read the rest of my post to get a substantial amount of idea of what segregation is.

To minimize the trash a particular household generates, one should apply waste segregation practices.

The biodegradable wastes are those that breakdown easily by bacteria. Examples of this are peelings of fruits and vegetables, fish intestines and insides, chicken and pork bones, egg shells, rotten foods, manure, grasses, sticks and twigs, ashes and the like. One should keep these wastes on a temporary metal or plastic containers with a cover. To get rid of these accumulated trash, simply dug a deep hole on the ground (depends on how many trash you may put in it), place the waste inside the ditch and cover it with soil. This is an effective way to fertilize the soil as bacteria eats away the waste. Compost is produced by doing this for gardening purposes especially from manure. Animal wastes are also converted into Methane gas to use as an alternative gas to be used in cooking. These method is safe and no harm done to the environment whatsoever.

Recyclable trash are those materials that can be used a hundred or even a thousand times. Examples are paper and cartons, metal and glass bottles and plastic containers.

In the US, scientists have already developed biodegradable plastics made from corn. Common plastics contribute to a number of land pollution issues as these materials cannot breakdown easily by bacteria.

These materials should be delivered to the nearest recycling facility in your area. You can also get some money out of recycling.

Here in the Philippines, men who collect recyclable materials comes with a cart and roams the streets as they shout “Bote, Dyaryo!” (Bottles , Newspapers). You can sell them your used newspapers, plastic bottles and glass bottles. These men will deposit these materials on a junk shop where they weigh it and pay those collectors.

The third ones are those wastes that needed to be dumped on a landfill. Typical examples are sanitary napkins and diapers as these are non-biodegradable and definitely non-recyclable (who would recycle them anyway…eew! haha!). Clothings and rags, ceramics, candy wrappers and other wrappers and Styrofoam. Items should be collected and put in a garbage bag and wait for the garbage collector to collect the trash.

What are the benefits of segregation?
Segregating wastes will drastically reduce the amount of trash being dumped on landfills. Aside from these, local residents can make money out of it by selling recyclable items on junk shops and recycling facilities. Segregation will keep the soil rich in nutrients. Farmers can make their own compost to fertilize their farm to produce good crops. Segregation will limit the effects of land pollution and areas around it will be cleaner and odor free.

Implementation problems of segregation in the Philippines
Last 2000, the government enacted a law in regards to the practice if waste segregation. Republic Act 9003 on the Economic Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 requires each barangay to setup a material recovery facility (MRF). Waste segregation, recycling, composting of biodegradable waste and storing of recyclable materials are the key projects under the MRF. However, most barangays in the country trashed this law due to lack of knowledge and funds.

Under Section 10 of R.A. 9003, barangays play a vital role in carrying out the provisions of the law, because waste segregation and collection are under their jurisdictions.

How sad to think that only a few barangays dedicate part of their duties to waste segregation. The government must alleviate their effort to educate barangay officials of this law. Imagine if 80% of all barangays in the Philippines participated in this project, there will be less land to be allocated for landfills. Angry mobs who oppose these landfills in their area will be reduced.
